What is BRM Therapy?

BRM, or “Bone Rhythm Moment” Therapy, is a non-invasive therapeutic manual technique established by Kunio Yoshida in Japan. BRM Therapy blends a Western Medicine understanding of the human body with authentic Japanese hands-on manipulative technique. BRM Therapy has been studied and practiced not only among Massage therapist but also Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Manual therapists, medical doctors, dentists and midwives in Japan

BRM Therapy aims to release the tension in connective tissues such as fascia, tendons, ligaments, the skin and muscles. This approach counters mechanical stress patterns and postural imbalances, helping the body to restore its natural alignment. The overall release of tension at the same time improves the environment for the nervous system to function optimally. Through its comprehensive approach to the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system and the fascial system, BRM Therapy facilitates the body’s ability to self-correct.

To achieve this, BRM Therapy makes use of the natural “Bone rhythm” of the client and skin manipulation by the therapist.

“Bone rhythm” is a subtle movement that originates from the production - reabsorption cycling of cerebrospinal fluid inside the head. The rhythm of this cycle is received by the dura which surrounds the central nervous system, and from there it radiates through the periosteum surrounding the bones as well as ligaments, tendons, muscle, fascia all the way to the skin, influencing the whole body. Utilizing skin manipulation from the therapist delivers tissue change by stimulating a neurosensory function of the body. Using Bone rhythm as an intrinsic mechanical drive and stimulating the nervous system by skin manipulation, BRM Therapy facilitates the body to reach its own optimal balance.

How does it Feel?

To be effective, the most important principle of BRM Therapy is not to suppress the bone rhythm during treatment. In the view of BRM Therapy, when the body receives strong pressure, it immediately reacts and the tissue gets tense. This suppresses the bone rhythm and prevents the body’s self-correcting ability. Therefore, the touch during treatment is very light as that of a mother touching her baby’s skin. The sensation clients can feel during treatment varies and also changes with experience. Some people will feel bone or muscle movement, sometimes the whole body might shift or there won’t be much of a sensation during the session but after a few days symptoms get better. Since BRM Therapy tries to work on the root cause of problems, movements can also often be felt in areas the practitioner is not touching. The client will be fully clothed during the BRM Therapy session.

Brm Approach to the Body

BRM Therapy views the body as a continuous unit and views the cause of pain and dysfunction as a result of the lack of connective balance. This means that oftentimes the area that is painful is not the main source of the problem, but there is instead an underlying cause outside the actual pain area. To find the cause of the problem, BRM Therapy assesses the body from the viewpoint of biomechanics of the joints and kinesiology: As a kinetic chain of muscles and bones working together to achieve balance of the functional axis of the body. This approach of BRM Therapy aims to solve the root-cause of the problem rather than separately treating individual sites of pain.
